Basic rules for driving in Okinawa
When using a rental car in Okinawa, there are some traffic rules you should know.
Speed limit
- General roads: 60km/h
- Expressways: 80km/h
- Around schools: 30km/h (school zones)
Parking lots
Parking at tourist spots often requires a fee. The price is generally around 200 yen to 500 yen per hour. There are many coin parking lots, so it's a good idea to have some coins on hand.
Drive on the right
Japan drives on the left. Please be especially careful if you are coming from overseas.
Required to wear seat belts
Not only the driver and passenger seats, but also the rear seats are required to wear seat belts.
Drink-driving prohibited
Drink-driving is absolutely prohibited. There are severe penalties for violation.
